Dhenkanal, Aug 25: Odisha Human Rights Commission has sought reports from Dhenkanal SP and Collector over the social boycott of 40 Dalit families by the villagers at Kantio Kateni village under Tumusinga police limits.
According to reports, around 40 families in the village were allegedly socially ostracized after a girl from their community plucked flowers from the farm of an ‘upper-caste ‘man two months ago.
The social boycott continues against her community even as girl’s parents apologised soon after the incident.
As punishment, the families are banned from taking part in rituals and are not allowed to talk to anybody in the village. Moreover, government ration shops have been asked not to give them rations.
In this regard, the Dalit family had filed a written complaint at the police station. On Friday, a meeting was also held at Tumusingha police station, where Dhenkanal SP, Kamakhyanagar sub-collector and SDPO were present.
The OHRC has taken suo motu cognizance about the matter and directed the Collector and SP to file report by September 15.
