Chennai, Jan 5: The customs officers at the Chennai International Airport on Tuesday seized as many as 1364 live star tortoises from an export consignment that was to be sent to Malaysia through air cargo.
According to sources, the consignment consisted of 13 packages and it was said that it contained 230 kg of live crab.
The package was also listed under the risk management system which meant, it should not be opened or inspected.
However, the air customs was tipped off about a possible wildlife smuggling following which the officials intervened and checked the packages.
Seven out of 13 packages contained tortoises which are listed under endangered species.
The tortoises were then handed over to the Tamil Nadu forest department for their rehabilitation.
