Wrath over bauxite mining from Maliparbat: Locals create havoc at public hearing in Koraput

Koraput, Sep 22: Enraged over mining operation in Maliparbat, locals of Semiliguda in Koraput have created havoc at the place of public hearing on Wednesday. People from around 70 villages of 18 gram panchayats turned the public hearing venue into a battlefield in the afternoon. Sources said, the Pollution Control Board had organized a public hearing on resuming bauxite production from Maliparbat at Kankada Amba village under Semiliguda block today. The leasee of Maliparbat, Hindalco authorities,representatives of Koraput district administration and officials of the Pollution Control Board were present here to hear public grievances regarding environmental issues. Meanwhile, a crowd of villagers rampaged at the place of public hearing with traditional weapons. Subsequently, the mob destructed tables, chairs and other logistics in the meeting. Subsequently, they raised voice against bauxite production from Maliparbat and chased the officials present at the spot.Following this, tension gripped in and around the Semiliguda area. Acting on it, armed police ventured to the spot and controlled the mob.However,10 platoons of police force has been deployed here so far, anticipating further law and order situation.
