Bhubaneswar, Dec 4: ST & SC Development Department has taken up a virtual tour to Odisha State Tribal Museum on every Sunday. This Sunday the visitors can visit the comb making by Kutia Kandha by opening the Facebook and Twitter pages @stscdev, @scstrti, said Director SCSTRTI Prof. (Dr.) A. B. Ota. The Kutia Kandhas are skilled in fashioning beautiful combs from bamboo splits. Their women like to adorn their hair with combs. These combs are used not just to untangle the hair, but also as gifts of courtship in the community. Combs are presented by boys to the girls as a sign of affection. Combs are made by cutting bamboo splits into equal lengths and tying them together. Earlier siali fibre was used to tie the splits which have now been replaced by cotton threads to hold the splits in place. A newly married daughter returning to her maternal home for the first time gifts a comb to each of her female relatives which are made by her new brother-in-laws.
