Turtle research centre and DNA lab launched in Odisha

Gopalpur, Mar 6: The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) has launched an advanced turtle research centre and a DNA Lab at Gopalpur, Odisha. The Director of ZSI, Kolkata Dr. Kailash Chandra and Bio-scientist Dr. Basudev Tripathy formally inaugurated the centres on March 5. The centre is named after eminent marine biologist Dr. Chandra Sekhar Kar. It is the first turtle research centre in Odisha to carry on intensive study on turtles fitting scientific tags with them. As many as 30,000 tags will be fitted primarily with around 10,000 turtles to track their movement, said Kar. Similarly, the newly established DNA lab will be utilised to determine the nature and class of species from animal’s body parts, said ZSI Scientist, Gopalpur Dr. Anil Mohapatra. Meanwhile, a workshop on ‘Census of Marine turtle’ was inaugurated by Kailash Chandra. The Vice-Chancellor of Khallikote University Prof. Dr. Prafulla Kumar Mohanty, member of the State Wildlife Board Prof. Sushil Kumar Dutt, biologist of Berhampur University Dr. Prasanna Kumar Dikhit, Dr. Jaykishore Seth, Dr. Seshdev Patra, Dr. Anjana Kumar Prusty, Dr. A Gokul along with research scholars Dr. Satyaranjan Behera and Dr. Muralidharan N participated in the workshop..
