London, Aug 23: In sports, when the chips are down, heads do roll. Search for alternatives begin. Change in guard takes place.
With England not performing as expected in either the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, or the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, as expected, changes in the coaching staff have been initiated.
England's white-ball coach Matthew Mott was sacked earlier this month. Marcus Trescothick has been handed the responsibility of interim head coach for the T20I and ODI series against Australia next month.
If English men do well against arch rivals Aussies, then Trescothick may be a strong contender for the full-time head coach job. Though an official advertisement by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is still awaited, but Trescothick assuming full-time head coach job is a possibility, revealed a section of English press on Friday.
Former England captain Trescothick is one of England's assistant coaches, who worked with the Test team during their ongoing series against Sri Lanka. But for his new role, he will have to leave the Test squad during the third Test at The Oval, reports added.
After leaving the Test team, Trescothick will join the white-ball squads, which are due to be announced next week - at the Utilita Bowl in Southampton ahead of the first T20I on September 11, reports stated.
Despite average show by the English men in recent times, Jos Buttler however, has retained the white-ball captaincy.
England has a very busy schedule. Their T20I series against Australia starts after only 24 hours after the fifth day of their third and final Test against Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Andrew Flintoff has reportedly left England's white ball coaching role. The former English all-rounder joined the England coaching setup as an assistant coach before the start of the ICC T20 World Cup. England crashed out of the T20 World Cup following a defeat at the hands of India in the semifinal.
Reports in some English media revealed that England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler was behind Flintoff's exit from the coaching unit.
The new full-time England coaching set-up will definitely depend on their performance against Australia in the upcoming ODI and T20I games, feel experts.
