Bhubaneswar, Nov 20: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has instructed the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Police Commissioner to take appropriate measures in the Subhalaxmi death case, following a petition filed by Subrat Kumar Dash.
The Commission has directed the Police Commissioner to address the matter within eight weeks.
In its directive, the NHRC stated, "The complaint must be forwarded to the relevant authority for suitable action. The concerned authority is mandated to take appropriate action within eight weeks, involving the complainant/victim and providing them with information on the actions taken."
Subhalaxmi Sahu, a Plus II student at Kamala Nehru Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, was found hanging in a room on Puri-Cuttack Road on August 4. The post-mortem report indicated asphyxiation as the cause of death, occurring approximately 24-36 hours prior to the examination. While ligature marks were evident on the body, no other injuries were observed.
Subsequently, the Bhubaneswar Deputy Commissioner of Police confirmed that the death was a result of suicide.
Worth mentioning, the Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW), have taken suo motu case, and directed the Bhubaneswar DCP to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a comprehensive report.
