Bhubaneswar: The National Green Tribunal has directed the State Government to conduct a probe into the allegation of stealing of valuable stones from the land of the Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri located in Khorda district and submit a report within two months.
The NGT has issued a direction in this regard in response to a petition filed by activist Bidubhushan Harichandan recently. Harichandan had, in his petition, alleged that valuable stones are being regularly stolen by mafia at 40 places. The Shree Jagannath Temple has about 500 acres of land having stones in the district.
Harichanda also mentioned that villagers, who are opposing the therft, are being threatened by the stone mafia. He demanded that Government be directed to conduct an investigation and take action against the mafia.
The NGT had directed the Government to form a committee comprising four high-level officers, including the district Collector, to conduct invesgitations into the allegations. The Government has been asked to submit an investigation report before the NGT within two months’ time.
