Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: The Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department today celebrated the State Level National Handloom Day at Boyan Bhawan in Bhubaneswar. Padmini Dian, Minister, Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts graced the function and inaugurated the celebration in presence of the secretary of the department Shubha Sarma. August 7 has been chosen for its special significance in India’s freedom struggle. On this day of 1905, the Swadeshi Movement was formally launched at a massive meeting in the Calcutta Town Hall. To commemorate the beginning of Swadeshi Movement in 1905 on August 7, the day is celebrated as National Handloom Day all over the country with the objective to generate awareness on the importance of Handloom Industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country in general. On this occasion three primary weavers cooperatives were felicitated for highest sales turn over in last three years.
