New Delhi, May 16: The Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday informed that the southwest monsoon winds have touched the South Andaman Sea and the Nicobar islands six-day ahead of the normal schedule.
The IMD has also issued a warning of heavy rain (64.5 mm to 115.4 mm in 24 hours) during the next five days accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Meanwhile, The onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala is expected on May 27.
The progress of the monsoon currents this year is believed to be earlier than normal due to the occurrence of the cyclone Asani that impacted parts of AP, Odisha, and West Bengal and brought plenty of moisture over the region.
The cross-equatorial flow too had picked up, aiding the monsoon currents hit the Andaman Sea earlier than normal.
