Six burnt alive, 12 injured in fire mishap at chemical factory in AP

Hyderabad, April 14: In an unfortunate incident, at least six persons were killed and 12 others sustained critical burn injuries after a major fire broke out at a chemical factory in Eluru district of Andhra Pradesh last night.

As per reports, the fire mishap took place around 11:30 pm on Wednesday (April 13) in Porus Laboratories Private Limited at Akkireddygudem area in the district when a gas leak caused an explosion and resulted in a fire in the fourth unit of the plant.

Thereafter, the workers engaged there got trapped and sustained critical injuries. Five of them died on the spot and another breathed his last on the way to Vijayawada Government General Hospital.

Around 12 other labourers have been shifted to Vijayawada Government General Hospital with over 70 percent burns.

Meanwhile, the police along with fire officials, on being alerted, rushed to the spot and swung into action. The flame was doused after around two hours of continuous efforts.

The Andhra Pradesh government has announced ex gratia of Rs 25 lakh to families of the deceased, Rs 5 lakh to those seriously injured, and Rs 2 lakh to the others who suffered injuries in the boiler blast.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the loss of lives in a tragic mishap. “Pained by the loss of lives due to a mishap at a chemical unit in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover quickly: PM @narendramodi” tweeted the Office of the Prime Minister.
