Shravan first Monday: Devotees throng Shiva temples in Odisha

Tuhina Sahoo Bhubaneswar, July 18: A large number of devotees thronged different Shiva shrines across Odisha, on the occasion of the first Monday of the holy month of Shravan. Besides, the ‘Bol Bom’ devotees or ‘kanwariyas’ thronged the shrines to pour holy water on Shiva lingas. As per the belief, wishes get fulfilled by offering prayers to Lord Shiva on Shravan Monday. The devotees also observed fast to seek blessings of the god. They were seen offering milk, bel leaves, honey, flowers and sandalwood paste. The devotees usually break fast after sunset or at night. Then they have a light meal, mostly comprising sabudana, raw banana to protect their digestion. "Today is the first Monday of Shravan month. I come to Shiv temple every Monday. I have offered water and milk to Lord Shiva", Shailashree Nanda of Acharya Vihar said. On the other hand, the priest of Bhubaneswari Temple here said, "I am here as a priest since 2002. The devotees this month offer milk, holy water, ghee and honey praying for their prosperity, happiness and fulfilment of their wishes. And today also, I have seen so many devotees making beeline since 5:00 am to offer their prayers."
