Puri, July 29: Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati and several religious organisations have questioned the decision of Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) to introduce the facility of beach shacks at Puri beach. OTDC has earlier invited online applications to set up beach shacks at six locations including Puri and the last date for submitting the application is tomorrow. Shankaracharya has urged the government not to allow beach sacks in holy town of Puri. Besides several other organisations have come forward opposing the facility in Puri. They also met the Puri Collector demanding withdrawal of the decision. For tourism promotion, serving liquor in beach shacks is now allowed under the Excise Policy, 2021. The OTDC will obtain a licence from the excise department for the selected operators for each location, subject to payment of annual fee, licence fee and other rentals.
