Ring of industries hinders Covid containment in Angul!

By Prashant Dash Angul , May 6: Covid infection in Angul district is shooting high. It tends to leap out of hand gradually, despite the sincere effort of the administration. The ring of industries scattered all over the district is considered to be the prime reason of spreading the virus aggressively. The urban bodies including Angul and Talcher Municipality along with Athmallik NAC are working on war footing to contain infection in the urban and semi urban regions. The district administration has assigned the blocks and Gram Panchayats to fight it in the suburbs. The Chief District Medical Officer is leading the testing, vaccination and treatment teams of the District Headquarters Hospital, Primary Health Centres and Community health centres. As many as four Covid hospitals are now operational to treat the positive patients. Two wards of the DHH, Angul have been dedicated as Corona hospital, partial unit of Mohanadi Coal Field Hospital in Talcher is also taking care of the  Covid-19 patients. Apart from it, the ESI dispensary in Angul is also taking care of Covid infected patients. Similarly, Talcher Super Thermal Power Station (TSTPS) at Kaniha is managing a special Covid hospital alongside its occupational health centre. All hospitals now operate with more than that of the full capacity due to the surge of Corona. At the same time, the district police is vigilant to enforce corona protocols properly. Similarly, wide use of masks, social distancing and crowd management in the towns are strictly abided by. However, more positive cases from less testing are new concerns for the people. As per the district data base, as many as 66 patients were Corona affected as on June 29, 2020 while the number reached 188 by October. On the other hand, during the second wave, as many as 450 persons tested positive on May 4 and the number of  total infected ones exceeds 17,511 so far. Un-avoidable commuters, out-state labors those flock over the industries situated around Angul town is considered to spread Corona here. Within a radius of 11 kilometres from Angul Town, there are three large scale industries having more than four thousand contractual workers each. Those are Nalco, JSPL and Bhusan Steel. Nalco has more than 13% workers from out stations while most of its technical maintenance is depended on outsiders. Similarly, the power plant of JSPL at Nisha its rolling plant, steel plant, coal handling plant(CHP) and the Coal-to-liquid(CTL) plant is almost depending on labourers from the neighboring states like Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Haryana and Jharkhand.  Similarly, Bhusan Steel at Kantabania, TTPS at Talcher, NTPC at Kaniha and JITPL at Dereng are also having national and international access into their plants. In addition the Mohanadi Coal Fields (MCL) stretched around 56 square Kilometres along Talcher-Chhendipada coal belt operate with more than 17 thousands of floating workers. About 75 wagons transport coal from it with manual labors with an interstate linkage. About four thousand truckers carry coal to other states gathering at a common loading point. Operation of the industrial establishments during the pick time of the second wave of Covid-19 has stood as a challenge before the district administration to cope up with the menace.
