Puri, July 1:The chariots of Lord Jagannath and his siblings have begun rolling on the Grand Road Puri on Friday. Amid the blowing of conches and beating of cymbals, the annual Rath Yatra began in his heritage town today. The three traditionally bedecked chariots of Nandighosha (for Jagannath), Taladhwaja (for Balabhadra), and Devadalana (for Subhadra) set off their annual sojourn to Gundicha temple. Lakhs of devotees started pouring into the pilgrim town in the early morning to be a part of the religious event. Pilgrims and devotees pulled the chariots one after the other with devotion in a procession towards Gundicha temple in Puri, which is around 3 km away from the main shrine. The pulling of the chariots began this year over three-hour earlier than the schedule. Police personnel and armed forces have been deployed to ensure proper security for the devotees and tourists, who have congregated this year after two years of the ban imposed in view of the Covid pandemic.
