Bhubaneswar: To prevent power theft and reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses of power distribution companies, the State Government is all set to launch smart and prepaid electricity meters.
The proposed facility will be launched on pilot basis in Sambalpur and Rourkela towns. In the first phase, nearly 25 lakh consumers will have smart and prepaid meters in their houses.
In the first phase, 4,500 prepaid meters will be installed in houses in Sambalpur town, informed Energy Minister Dibya Shankar Mishra. Smart meters will be introduced in Rourkela.
Mishra said that the main objective of introducing the system is to put a check on metre tampering.
Based on the outcome in these towns, the model would be replicated across the State, added the Minister.
