Bhubaneswar, Jan 12: With the declaration of panchayat poll dates, political parties have started preparing to run a digital election campaign after a surge in Covid-19 cases across Odisha. The three major political parties-Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the Congress-are strengthening their information technology (IT) infrastructure to hold virtual rallies as well as digital public meetings on various social media platforms, including Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. The parties have also assigned separate responsibilities to booth level office-bearers to connect people on WhatsApp and other platforms. A BJD leader said the party has been creating thousands of WhatsApp groups in rural areas and adding youths. BJP OBC front president Surath Biswal said even though the party already has a strong presence on social media, they are making extra arrangements for virtual campaigning. The panchayat polls are scheduled to be held in Odisha in five phases in February this year.
