Bhubaneswar, Oct 8: Oxford University has praised Odisha for outstanding Covid management through “Ganjam” model. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has appreciated Odisha for excellent Covid management. After studying 310 cities and towns, researchers from Oxford University found that Ganjam’s Covid management model is the most successful in infection prevention. About 5 lakh people returned to Ganjam in the month of May after lockdown from Covid hotspot states like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu making the situation more difficult. “One of the main reasons for the success of Ganjam in Covid management is because of the very active participation of Sarpanches in Covid management. They were empowered with District Collector powers and many of them laid down their lives in this fight against Covid. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took it as a challenge like Phailin for Ganjam in 2013. He personally monitored Covid management in Ganjam district,” said a senior government official. Besides the CM regularly interacted with the Ganjam district administration and also with Sarpanches to control Covid in the district while record number of officers and doctors were deputed to the district during the peak period of the pandemic.
