Bhubaneswar, July 4: In a shocking incident, a tribal woman in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur distirict has allegedly sold out her newborn baby to another woman for a sum of Rs 1 lakh.
On being aware of the fact, police and Child Welfare Committee (CWC) have swung into action to recover the one-day boy from the purchaser, reportedly a woman from Andhra Pradesh.
Sources said, one Mamina Sarda, a resident of the Sankhud slum, in Jagatsinghpur had given birth to a baby boy at Atharabanki government hospital on Sunday. After the next day she was lying in the medical bed lone whereas the newborn boy was found missing. Meanwhile, another woman identified as Manga, who was on the row to purchase the newborn baby, reported the hospital authorities that Mamina had sold her baby to a Vizag-woman for Rs 1,00000.
Acting on it, the Jagatsinghpur police took up an investigation and the CWC initiated a probe in this connection.
During interrogation, it was revealed that the baby was handed over to the Vizag-woman for Rs 1L.
The woman reportedly confessed that she was keen to abort her unwanted pregnancy. However, she waited for safe delivery of it as the woman from Vizag requested her not to go for abortion.
“She also assured me a safe institutional delivery with a good amount for maintenance of the elder girl”, the mother added.
The police have formed a special team to investigate the matter. Similarly, the CWC is all set to take stern action against the offenders.
