Bhubaneswar, July 30: Odisha government today scrapped the plan to introduce the facility of beach shacks at Puri beach. The decision not to go with the facility was taken a day after several social organisations and Puri Shankaracharya Swami Nischalananda Saraswati opposed the plan. The Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) has earlier invited online applications to set up beach shacks at six locations including Puri. Shankaracharya has urged the government not to allow beach sacks in holy town of Puri. Besides several other organisations have come forward opposing the facility in Puri. For tourism promotion, serving liquor in beach shacks is now allowed under the Excise Policy, 2021. The OTDC will obtain a licence from the excise department for the selected operators for each location, subject to payment of annual fee, licence fee and other rentals.
