Bhubaneswar, Nov 18: A day after Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed departments to redesign their strategies to engage more women self-help groups (SHGs) in government activities, political mud-slinging has started in the state.

Opposition BJP and Congress have blamed the ruling Biju Janata Dal for ‘bribing’ women for the upcoming rural poll. The Opposition has accused the ruling party of playing political stunts to woo women votes for the ensuing elections. “The BJD only thinks of women during the election time. As the rural poll is approaching, the BJD government is luring women through the Mission Shakti. This will not impact the women voters and the Government’s stunt will fail,” alleged the Opposition.

On the other hand, the ruling Biju Janata Dal has slammed the Opposition parties. “ The Naveen Patnaik government never takes any step for the sake of elections. The government has taken this step to empower the women of the state. This should not be linked with the election,” said a BJD leader.

To provide banking services to people in over 4,6000 un-banked gram panchayats, CM Naveen directed officials to engage the SHG members as banking correspondents.

The Naveen Cabinet in its first meeting in the year 2019 approved the proposal on provisioning of Government Services & Procurements worth Rs 5000 cr in 5 years through Mission Shakti.. Mission Shakti has achieved impressive progress in providing business worth of Rs.1198 cr to 104712 SHGs generating income of Rs 296 crore during 2020-21 in convergence with different government departments.
