Bhubaneswar, Oct 18: The Directorate of Prisons is planning to introduce drone-based surveillance system in sensitive jails. Besides the directorate is also starting prisoner calling system as pilot projects in Choudwar and Jharapada jails. Officials said that drones will be helpful to have better inside surveillance in sensitive jails. “Though we have CCTVs in jails but the coverage of the CCTVs is limited. Drones will be extremely helpful in monitoring the activity of inmates inside jail premises,” said an official. Similarly, under the prisoner calling system, each prisoner can get access to two phone numbers which are pre-fixed only for 5 minutes. “There will be four booths in each jail including one dedicated booth for women. A prisoner will have to pay Rs 5 for the 5-minute call,” said the official. Besides, the directorate has also started the process of procuring 20 body-worn cameras that will be used by our staff in different jails. These cameras will be used for transparency, accountability, security and protection of human rights. It will also help in dealing various issues regarding complaints and allegations of staff against inmate movement.
