By D N Singh A scary doomsday is likely to re-play out if a second thought does not go into before throwing open schools in the state, lock-stock and barrel. The recent detection of some positive cases of Covid either in Sundregarh or anywhere else, do remind us the warnings from so many experts a month back which had been mentioned in these pages. The dangers are not yet over. It is not about creating a hurdle for the offline classes everywhere but, precautions apart, “ we are fighting a war against an enemy yet beyond the domain of our wisdom” said Dr Kamalakanta Das, senior medicine specialist. In a way we have invited the situation in the race of being first to reopen the educational institutions before a foolproof deterrent and the know-how. Dr.S Narayan Mishra, Sr. Medicine Specialist endorses such as assumption “ I had told that this has had to happen and now the first thing to do is, quickly go back to the online mode of teaching, else” he added, “ the situation may lead to a worse one because, the new virus delta can be more in comfort with its infection among the youngsters “. Experts further apprehend that, the people with even double inoculation have not been able to develop in them the required anti-bodies. Or the anti-bodies developed do not survive and in some cases, it does not develop at all. Some Thing That Needs Relook Lets imagine, 29 medical students in Veer Surendra Sai Medical Institute & Research, in Burla, must have been the ones, jabbed twice and yet tested positive. It means the anti-body that is being discussed to grow after the double vaccination does not happen. Or 53 students in Sundergarh’s a few girl schools testing positive also send a similar fear that, somewhere we are throttling the underlying real issue. What is indeed more mystifying is the asymptomatic nature of the infection. Of the total 53 found with Covid-19 positive, except four or five rest students have no symptoms at all. Which multiplies the level of no know-how in our expertise. Opening of schools may be viewed as a preparedness against the infections claimed to be on the decline. But, given the instances of resurfacing of Covid, it is for the government of Odisha to take a call yet again. Because it is about youngsters and children 5 to 18 years. Instinctively, human habit is that, somehow we tend to touch our face parts over two hundred times a day. That’s a challenge and we cannot overlook that in case of children it can be double the times. Decline In Trend Yet Illusive What is bothering is that, although the Covid-19 is on a declining trend but there is no let up in the positive cases and that too in the age group of babies to 18 years! Seventy cases of positive in the age group of 0 to 18 out of the total 212 fairly recently, is something requires serious attention. “It would be prudent for the government here to hold back its decision to further open the schools mainly for the younger class those who cannot be bind by dos and donts” quipped Dr Das. “What is more important for us and for the children especially, I leave it to the government to think” he added.
