Dhenkanal, Nov 27: Magaja ladoo, a delectable sweet from Odisha’s Dhenkanal, is likely to get Geographical Indications (GI) tag soon as preliminary tests have already been completed. A meeting in this regard is likely to be held on December 6. Sources said, at least five items from Odisha have been selected for GI tag in preliminary tests- Kai (Red Ant) Chutney of Mayurbhanj, Rasabali of Kendrapara, Cuttack's Silver Filigree (Chandi Tarakasi), Gajapati's Date Palm Jaggery along with Dhenkanal’s Magaja ladoo. Earlier on December 7, 2020, the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) had submitted an application to the Geographical Indications Registry seeking the tag. It is worth mentioning that Dhenkanal's Magaja ladoo, which is originated from Gandia locality of Dhenkanal district, is made with whole wheat flour, sugar, ghee and is flavored with cardamom and black pepper. It is one of the famous 'Chaapan Bhog' (56 offerings) offered to Lord Jagannath and his siblings in Puri.
