Cuttack, Dec 29: Nihar Nalini Swain, the foster mother of Odisha’s legendary tigress Khairi, passed away in Ashirvad Old Age Ashram at Siddheswar Sahi of Cuttack city on Wednesday afternoon. She passed away at an age of 93 due to age-related ailments. She breathed her last at the old-age home where she spent her life following the death of her cousin brother, Saroj Ray Choudhary, a former top forest officer. It is pertinent to mention, Nihar Nalini’s brother Saroj was posted as field director of Similipal Tiger Reserve in 1972. Some local tribals rescued a female tiger cub from Khairi riverbank in 1974. Later, they handed over the lone cub to the forest official. Saroj Raj and sister Nihar Nalini named the tigress as ‘Khairi’ after the river. The forest officer took the cub to his house in Jashipur and both brother and sister brought her up with all human care. Soon the tigress became an inseparable part of their family. Nihar Nalini took care of Khairi starting from feeding to playing with her. After Khairi became full grown, the tigress died due to severe bacterial infection in 1881.
