Narcotic cases rise by 235% in May-July compared to 2021 in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: As many as 583 cases were registered under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Odisha during May-July this year while 174 cases were registered under the Act during this period last year. According to the data, around 235 percent more cases have been registered this year in the three months. Similarly, 208 percent more accused have been arrested under the NDPS Act this year during this period, said the state excise department. Similarly, the excise department seized 12,710 kg ganja and 6214 gm brown sugar during this period this year, estimated to be worth around Rs 64 crore, which is 260 percent higher than last year. During May- July last year, the excise department had seized 1257 kg bhang and 5,657 kg this year, 350 percent higher. Besides, as many as 14,688 accused were arrested during excise raid across the state during May-July this year that is 70 percent higher than last year during this quarter. The department also registered 18,145 cases during this period which is 72 percent higher than last year, including 583 cases under NDPS Act The department is digitalising the excise cases registered in last 10 years that will help in tracking the habitual offenders, said departmental officials.
