Nation celebrates Kranti Divas which marks the beginning of Quit India movement

Congress had given the call on August 9, 1942 to British rulers to Quit India (Bharat Chhodo). This was the culmination of the Freedom Struggle. The movement was launched by Mahatma Gandhi at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC). Since the protest took place in August, it is also known as August Kranti or the August Movement. Every year the day is celebrated when tribute is paid to the freedom fighters who gave their lives for the country. After Cripps' departure, Mahatma Gandhi put forth a resolution calling for the British to withdraw and a movement for non-violent cooperation against the Japanese invasion began. Since then August 9 is celebrated as Kranti Divas. Every year, the President of India felicitates eminent freedom fighters from various states at Rashtrapati Bhawan. This year, two freedom fighters from Odisha have been selected for felicitation by President Ramnath Kovind.
