Bhubaneswar: The death toll in the Mahanadi bus accident rose to 10 with three more persons succumbed to injureis while undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack during the last night.
As many as 47 persons, who were travelling in the ill-fated bus, are still undergoing treatment in the premier medical. At least five of the injured are undergoing treatment in the ICU.
It may be noted a bus a bus, carrying around 60 passengers, fall of the Mahanadi bridge into the Mahanadi river bed near Jagatpur on Cuttack city outskirts on Tuesday evening. The bus was on its way to Cuttack from Angul. It is stated that the bus hit a buffalo and then skidded of the bridge.
All the bodies have been kept in a morgue in the SCB, and one of the bodies is stated to have been sent for post-mortem. After post-mortem, the bodies would be handed over to family members after post-mortem.
Notably, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed grief over the mishap and directed speedy rescue of the injured and treatment. He announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for each family of the each deceased.
Union Petroleum and Skill Development Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and State Health and Family Welfare Minister Pratap Jena visited the spot. The district Collector and the SP guided the rescue operation.
It may be noted that the particular place of the near 3-km-long Mahanadi bridge has turned out to be a black spot. In 1994, a bus, named Kanak Durga, plunged into the river when more than 40 people had died, according to reports.
