Kendrapara, Aug 29: Kamala Moharana of Kendrapara, who had garnered the Prime Minister’s appreciation in the Mann Ki Baat program for making household articles from waste, sent a rakhi made by her for Narendra Modi on Monday.

The 64-year-old Moharana of Khairput village under Gulnagar panchayat in the district was praised by the PM on February 26 in the 98th episode of Mann Ki Baat.

Kamala runs a self-help group (SHG) Ama Dakhyata that makes household products from plastic and polythene waste. Starting with a small group of women in 2016, she is now helping around 50 women earn by converting garbage into beautiful materials.

The SHG has been making household articles and home decors like baskets, pen stands, mobile phone stands, flower pots, hand fans, wall hanging, and other items from waste materials for the last seven years.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi called me sister and praised my work. Modiji is my elder brother.  So I prepared a rakhi from the waste materials and sent it to him by post on Monday,” said Kamala.

I was interested in weaving from my childhood and used to make daily use articles. I started making household articles from waste after I got to know that plastic and polythene wastes are hazardous to the environment and cause huge problems. Now the SHG has focused on recycling waste materials into creative items, she added.
