Journalists perform last rites of elderly woman as neighbours refuse to help over suspicion of corona infection

Balianta, May 9: Journalists in Balianta area of Khordha district have shown their humane side by performing the last rites of an elderly woman at Ranganisahi under Balakati police outpost.

According to reports, the deceased, identified as Tapei Behera, had been suffering from cough and fever for the last few days sine a long time and breathed her last on Saturday.   

However, her last rite was delayed as her grandson has tested positive for the virus, following which the local residents refused to help fearing infection of Covid-19.

After coming to know about the incident, members of Jaydev Press Union showed their humane side and visited her residence by wearing PPE kits, brought her body to cremation ground and also cremated her.

The funeral was attended by Union President Niranjan Senapati, Batakrishna Mohapatra, Gagan Bhoi, Pitabas Das, Jitendra Kumar Beura, Ashutosh Chowdhury, Bibhuti Bhushan Pradhan, Dinbandhu Bhoi and Pratap Sasan sarpanch Bhagyadhar Nandi.

Besides, three policemen of Balakati police outpost, including police officer Pradeep Kumar Rout assisted in the journalists in performing the last right.

The journalists have also earned appreciation from all quarters for providing dignified farewell to the elderly woman.
