Bhubaneswar, Aug 26: From Shishu Bhawan to Vani Vihar- the entire Janpath has been planned to be a part of Smart City. The entire stretch is being developed with tiles and designer bricks. But the newly designed thoroughfare is now blocking public passages almost everywhere. The street is being cleared of encroachments by vendors. But the established showroom owners are expanding their business illegally covering public roads. Even the pedestrian's passage and the bicycle track remain occupied. Similarly, the service roads which are meant for public convenience, that is to ease free shopping are almost covered up. The service road along Bapuji Nagar road has also been illegally encroached by portable shoppers. The service road beside the footpath, designed to be used by the pedestrians for easy passage from one lane to another, has already vanished. Some local traders have grabbed the whole service road, building permanent structures. City residents allege that the BMC authorities are not taking stringent action against the traders who are using public roads permanently. The Enforcement Squads of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation(BMC) although slap vendors imposing high amounts of fines, however, have a soft corner for the mall owners and the established business houses. Covering up public roads, passages,mid-lane corridors, footpaths and the dedicated routes for the cyclers is causing public inconvenience. Illegal parking prevails across the city whereas the dedicated parking places remain almost filled up with standing stalls. Rampant encroachments of government land and blocking the roadways, streets, and lanes in Bhubaneswar is now the biggest challenge before the Bhubaneswar Smart City Ltd.
