New Delhi, June 9: A day after the INDIA bloc meeting in Delhi, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi at her residence.
Sharing a photo of the meeting on X, the TMC highlighted the cordial relationship between the two leaders, stating that their bond had been strengthened through decades of service to the nation.
The meeting comes at a time when Mamata Banerjee is facing mounting challenges within the party. A CID team reached her Kolkata residence on Tuesday as part of an investigation into an alleged forged-signature case linked to the appointment of party office-bearers and the selection of the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.
The state CID has formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) and has already recorded statements from 13 TMC MLAs. Three legislators reportedly claimed that signatures appearing in a May 6 meeting resolution were not theirs, while another MLA stated he had not attended the meeting.
The probe has also reached TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who has been asked to submit the original resolution book. Through his legal counsel, Abhishek has responded to the agency.
The controversy stems from allegations that signatures were forged in documents submitted to the Assembly regarding the appointment of party office-bearers. Two TMC MLAs later complained that the resolution related to the opposition leadership was fabricated. The party subsequently suspended the legislators for alleged anti-party activities.
Based on a complaint filed by the Assembly's Principal Secretary, a case was registered under provisions related to cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The CID took over the investigation on May 28. Meanwhile, reports of growing dissent among some TMC legislators and parliamentarians have added to the party's internal challenges.
