India, US Seek Fresh Momentum as Jaishankar-Rubio Talks Focus on Trade, Security and Global Stability

New Delhi, May 24: India and the United States on Sunday indicated efforts to revive and strengthen bilateral ties as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held extensive discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on a range of sensitive issues, including trade, visas, energy cooperation, cross-border terrorism and the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Rubio, currently on a four-day visit to India, underscored Washington’s commitment to deepening ties with New Delhi, describing India as a rising global power. Rejecting suggestions that the relationship had lost momentum over the past two decades, he expressed confidence that Indo-US engagement would emerge significantly stronger by the conclusion of the present US administration’s term.

During the talks, Jaishankar reiterated India’s broader foreign policy vision and laid out a five-point framework aimed at ensuring global stability. Stressing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving conflicts, he said India supports uninterrupted maritime trade, advocates adherence to international law and opposes the “weaponisation” of critical market shares and resources.

The discussions reflected both countries’ intent to re-energise strategic cooperation while candidly addressing areas of concern amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
