ILS to celebrate 33rd Foundation Day tomorrow

Bhubaneswar, Feb 10: The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) is celebrating its 33rd Foundation Day tomorrow. It was established in 1989 by the Odisha government and was taken over by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in 2002. During the last few years ILS has undertaken several socially and scientifically research programs that has potential for positively impacting the human welfare and improving health, food and nutrition security. ILS has established itself as a centre for eminence in the country in the field of biological research through establishing state of art facilities and infrastructure, conducting several relevant research programs, contributing to human resources development and undertaking several socially relevant programs. The contribution of ILS during the COVID-19 pandemic has been outstanding and its efforts in RT-PCR testing of more than 4 lakh samples, whole-genome sequencing of nearly 11,000 positive samples, establishing 28 virus cultures and a biorepository of over 5,000 COVID-19 clinical samples and operationalization of an Animal Biosafety Laboratory and Drug Screening platform to aid to furthering virus research etc. are quite noteworthy. Through its research initiatives, during the last year, ILS has published 73 research papers, applied for 3 patents and was granted two patents, commercialized 2 technologies and 8 research students have received their Ph.D. degree. 5 research papers of ILS have been selected as cover stories of internationally reputed journals. Various research papers have reported significant contribution in the areas of Cancer Biology, Infectious Diseases, and Plant and environmental biotechnology. ILS has initiated its flagship program on Tribal Health and Nutrition in which scientists are employing advanced biotechnology-based tools and technologies for contributing to greater health and nutritional outcomes of the tribal populations of the state. ILS has taken initiatives towards translation of research leads to product development and subsequent commercialization. It has established a Bio-incubator for promoting entrepreneurship in biotechnology and life scienceswith support from both by Govt. of Odisha and Govt. of India. It now houses 21 incubatees focusing on product and enterprise development in the area of agriculture, healthcare, devices and diagnostic services. The ILS initiatives will significantly contribute to developing a vibrant research and entrepreneurship ecosystem in Odisha and in the eastern region of the country, said Dr. Ajay Parida, Director, ILS. ILS has been working in the aspirational district of Nabarangapur with an overall objective for economic empowerment of the tribal farming communities and have been focusing on agriculture, nutrition, value addition, integrated farming and natural resources management. A strong focus has been accorded to skill and capacity development of the community and creating awareness on food and nutrition security.
