Khordha, Jan 30: Banpur police today busted an idol theft gang and arrested four persons. Police said that all the accused belonged to various parts of Rajasthan. Police have seized as many as nine idols and four ingots. The accused have been identified as Mukesh Chandra Meena (44), Kailash Meena (34), Chuttan (32) and Manoj Kumar Meena (30). “All the accused are from Rajasthan and they often visit Odisha for idol theft. They used to impersonate themselves as daily wagers engaged in mounting of electric pole. The gang committed theft of as many as 22 idols from the famous Daksha Prajapati temple under Banpur police limits on January 22,” said a police official. Further investigation revealed the gang of mainly targeting idols made up of stones, metals and alloys. “The accused revealed that they could not take all the idols stolen in their last visit. As they have committed theft of many idols from different places, it was difficult for them to carry all the stolen properties with them so they have disposed of some idols while some other idols were melted into ingots,” added the official.
