Cuttack, Aug 22: With an aim to hone skills of spinners representing the state in various age groups, the Odisha Cricket Association (OCA) has begun a spin bowling camp at MGM School of Sports, near here.
The camp is headed by former India leg-spinner Narendra Deepchand Hirwani. The camp began on Wednesday and will continue till August 30, the organisers informed.
Hirwani is scheduled to guide, train and share his knowledge with selected Odisha state cricketers of all age groups. He will also impart coaching to Odisha state women cricketers, it is learned.
Representing India, Hirwani hit headlines whe he grabbed 16 wickets against West Indies in the Chennai Test in 1987-88 and was awarded Man of the Match.
The be-spectacled 19-year-old Hirwani, fashioned India's massive 255 runs victory in that Test, with his magical spells grabbing 8 wickets each in both innings of the fourth game of the series.
In that Test, there were two more Indian youngsters WV Raman and Ajay Sharma, who also made their debuts. But it was Hirwani, who drew all the attention for his impactful performance.
Hirwani was magical as a leggie with his turn, guile, trajectory and googly. In 17 Tests for India, he scalped 66 wickets and had 23 wickets in 18 ODIs. He dominated Indian domestic cricket for years playing for his home state Madhya Pradesh and Bengal as well.
