Hirakud Dam in Odisha opens 24 Sluice for releasing excess water

Sambalpur, Sept 16: Twenty-four of the 24 sluice gates of Hirakud Dam were opened on Thursday by authorities to release excess water, following incessant rain that caused the Mahanadi river water level to rise. A total of six gates will be opened, phase-wise. the water level at the reservoir is rising, at 6 am today it was at 628.39ft against the total reservoir level of 630 ft. The water inflow is 4,35,794 cusec while outflow is 4,23,089 cusec in Odisha. The authorities have advised people not to venture into the river. Water levels in major rivers of Odisha are rising while Jalaka river has already crossed the danger level following heavy rainfall across the state due to the depression, resulting in flood-like situations in several areas.
