Government to promote cage culture in Hirakud, aims 1.25 lakh MT fish per year

Bhubaneswar, June 5: The government of Odisha is all set to promote cage fish culture in Hirakud water body. It aims to harvest more than 1.25 metric ton of fish from the dam every year. The Department of Fisheries has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with 39 aquaculture based startups in this connection. According to the MoU, the startups will undertake fish farming in Hirakud water with modern Cage Culture technology. Cage fishing mechanisms will be developed in as many as 44 zones of the water body. It will have the capacity of about 1.25 metric ton of fish from as many as 15000 cages around the dam water per year. Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Empowerment, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Department, Arun Kumar Sahu said, Hirakud has got wide scope for cage culture. It will give a new dimension to fishing technology in Odisha.
