Koraput, Sept 2: A girl student has been electrocuted to death in a residential school in Koraput on Friday. The tragic incident took place at the Digapur Residential school, where a Class-X student, Sabita Mathapadia died after she touched an electric pole pegged on the school premises. Sources said that Sabita was a boarder of the Digapur residential school, managed by the SC/ST department. She came in contact with the charged high mast light pole while she was spreading her wet clothes in the morning. Subsequently, she died on the spot. Being informed, Jeypore police rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem. Following the untimely death of the student, parents and locals expressed concern and alleged utter negligence of the school authorities as there were open joints on the pole near the ground. They demanded action against the responsible officials and compensation to the surviving family members of the deceased. The school authorities sanctioned ex-gratia assistance of Rs 2 lakh to the family members of the deceased. However, the locals urged the district administration to initiate an investigation into the death of as many as four students on the campus earlier.
