Bhubaneswar, Aug 21: With the death of two persons in the spurious liquor mishap in Ganjam, the Odisha government on Wednesday expelled the Berhampur Excise Superintendent for delinquency of assigned duty.
The Excise Minister Prithwiviraj Harichandan informed it in the evening.
Interacting with media persons in this connection Harichandan said, the Excise Superintendent Berhampur, who is morally accountable for the mishap, has been transferred whereas a probe into the matter is sought.
He further added that the excise officials have been asked to beef up excise raids across the Ganjam district to get rid of the illegal country spirit manufacturing units and peddling of country liquors.
Worth mentioning, as many as two victims who were under treatment in SCB Medical College & Hospital after consuming unsafe and alleged toxic liquor, died today while at least 12 persons are yet critical.
The incident came up when more than 15 people from Karbala and Jenasahi villages fell ill after consuming the tainted liquor sold near Moundpur on Monday.
They were initially admitted to Chikiti Hospital with symptoms including severe stomach pain and vomiting. Fourteen of the affected individuals were later transferred to MKCG Hospital as their conditions worsened.
