New Delhi, May 21: Noted environmentalist and founder of Chipko Movement against deforestation in the 1970s, Sundarlal Bahuguna, died while undergoing treatment at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh in Uttarakhand this afternoon. The 94-year-old environmentalist was admitted to the hospital on May 8 after testing positive for Covid-19. His condition turned critical last night, with his oxygen level dropping drastically. He was on CPAP therapy in the hospital's ICU and succumbed to the virus this afternoon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took twitter to express his grief over the sad demise of the environmental activist. “Passing away of Shri Sunderlal Bahuguna Ji is a monumental loss for our nation. He manifested our centuries old ethos of living in harmony with nature. His simplicity and spirit of compassion will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with his family and many admirers. Om Shanti,” he tweeted, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat condoled his death by saying that the efforts of Shri Bahuguna ji, who keep the issues of water, forest and land in the mountains as his priority, and in the princely states, will always be remembered.
