Berhampur, Jan 25: Upset over problems in paddy procurement, scores of farmers staged a road blockade in Burujhari under P. Nuagaon in Ganjam district today. The agitating farmers stacked paddy sacks on the road here for hours, disrupting traffic from Beguniapada to Bhubaneswar. They alleged that the paddy at the purchase yards under this block was not being lifted. Sources said resentment is brewing among farmers across the district due to delays in paddy sales. Besides, there have been reports of tokens issued to farmers becoming invalid in absence of any fixed procurement target. This has led to farmers’ protests at several places. Reports said that, out of 364477 quintal paddy, 110069 quintal was sold and the rest is lying stocked at mandis. They made it clear that if the administration gives them assurance that their paddy would be lifted, they would withdraw their agitation.
