Nayagarh, August 16: Panic gripped the Pancharida area in Odisha’s Nayagarh district on Wednesday after two elephants, estranged from their herd barged into a school.
The incident took place at the Kalyanpur village under the Pancharida Forest Range in the morning which wreaked panic among the students and teachers.
Sources said, two elephants among one tusker had barged into the Kalyanpur late at night on Tuesday. After creating havoc around the village throughout the night, the pachyderms entered the Kalyanpur School during the school hour. As a result, students and teachers fled away from the campus to get rid of the elephants’ attacks.
On being informed, the forest range officials rushed to the spot and initiated an operation to get the elephants away from the habitat. However, it was not possible on their part as the elephants never moved away from a pond for long.
Forest teams are on alert to escort the elephants to the nearest forest. On the other hand, the locals are being sensitized not to tease the elephants with any fireworks or other means, in order to chase them out of the village, said a forest official.
