Bonai, Oct 30: A herd of elephants entered Dharanidharpali area in Sundargarh district and destroyed standing paddy crops on several acres of land in Bonai block. Locals alleged that though Forest officials had alerted them, they are yet to initiate any measures to prevent the elephants from entering crop fields. Tension prevailed in the affected village as the pachyderm destroyed crops and broke walls here. This has been a trend for the past few years with herds of elephants raiding human settlements during the harvest season. It has been alleged that the herd of elephants reportedly went on a rampage and destroyed crops. While the fear of elephants has forced residents to remain indoors after sundown, farmers are spending sleepless nights to guard their crops. The farmers urged the Forest department to assess the crop loss due to the elephants and adequate compensation.
