New Delhi, July 1: A Delhi court on Monday awarded five months of imprisonment to activist Medha Patkar in a defamation case filed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.

Delhi's Saket court also ordered her to pay Saxena Rs 10 lakh in fine. She has 30 days to appeal the judgement before the commencement of her sentence.

Saxena had filed the case in 2000 over a press release that Patkar had released during her involvement in the Narmada Bachao Andolan.

Patkar and Saxena are in a legal tussle since 2000 after she filed a suit against him for publishing advertisements against her and the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA).

Saxena had also filed two cases against Patkar in 2001 for making derogatory remarks against him on a TV channel and issuing a defamatory press statement.
