Bhubaneswar, Mar 21: Former Minister and veteran BJD leader Damodar Rout is critical, informed his son and Paradip MLA Sambit Routray today.
Talking to the media persons, Sambit held the Capital Hospital authorities responsible for his father’s health condition and alleged that doctors at the state-run hospital did not provide him CPR which led to extensive brain damage.
Sambit said that his father suffered a cardiac arrest on March 18 following which he was initially rushed to Capital Hospital at around 3 pm. However, Sambit alleged that the doctors at the hospital did not provide him CPR despite several requests.
Thereafter, he was shifted to a private hospital and there was a delay of 15 to 20 minutes in the shifting. As a result, his brain suffered extensive damage due to lack of oxygen supply, alleged Sambit.
"After arriving in the private hospital, CPR was given to my father and his heart started functioning but his brain is not functioning. His condition is very critical, " added Sambit.
Responding to the allegations, Capital Hospital Director Dr Laxmidhar Sahu said that Rout was brought to the hospital’s casualty unit two days back. His oxygen saturation level had dropped and records also showed stage 5 kidney issues.
He further added that he was attended by a team of doctors who provided him oxygen and also conducted ECG. The leader was provided with necessary primary treatment at the hospital, but he had to be shifted to other hospital as the Capital Hospital did not have specialized doctors for kidney-related issues.
Speaking on the CPR issue, Dr Sahu said there was no need to administer Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). It is usually given to a person who is unable to breathe and his (Damodar Rout's ) condition was not such. But after the family brought the allegations, a probe was conducted.
