Cuttack emerges overall champion of the Odisha State Sr Athletics meet

Bhubaneswar: The three-day long 70th State Senior Athletics Championship 2024 concluded at the Kalinga Stadium here on Friday, with an impressive display of athleticism and created 22 New Meet Record (NMR).  

Team Cuttack emerged as the overall champions. The team secured 312 points, while Sundargarh emerged runners-up in the category with 200 points.  

In the Girls Under-20 category Team Sundargarh emerged victorious with 86 points while in the boys Under-20 category team Cuttack emerged champions with 61 points. Girls Under-23 category Team Sundargarh were declared champions with 37 points while in the boys U-23 category Team Cuttack emerged on top with 80 points. Odisha Police’s teams were adjudged champions in both the men and women category. 

The closing ceremony recognised the finest athletes of the three-day competition across track and field events and was graced by dignitaries, including President of Odisha Athletics Association GS Pattanaik, OAA Secretary Aashirbad Behera, Director of Hockey Promotional Council of Odisha Deepankar Mohapatra amongst others who presented the medals to the Champions and runners up teams and congratulated all them for their impressive efforts. 

Director of Hockey Promotional Council of Odisha Deepankar Mohapatra extended his best wishes to the winners, the Odisha Athletics Association, the participants, coaches, and support staff for the smooth conduct of the championship. The Department will continue to provide every possible support to its athletes and ensure that Odisha remains ahead in athletics excellence, he added.

OAA president GS Pattanaik said, “The performances at this year’s State Senior Athletics Championship have been truly inspiring. Making 22 in one edition speaks volumes about the rising standard of athletics in Odisha. We are extremely proud of all the athletes who participated and delivered such stellar performances. The Association will continue its efforts to promote athletics and support athletes in their journey towards national and international success.”

Looking ahead, the focus will shift towards preparing athletes for upcoming national championships, where they will represent Odisha and aim to continue their winning streak on larger platforms, he added.

Among the notable record-breakers were:

Animesh Kujur of Bhubaneswar created 2 meet records in the boys U-23 100m and 200m with a timing of 10.38 secs and 20.65 respectively. 

Swagat Kumar Behera of Jharsuguda created a new meet record in the Boys U-20 Triple Jump Category with a height of 14.85 metres

Sunaram Murmu of Mayurbhanj created a new meet record in the U-23 boys Javelin with a throw of 62.70 metres. 

Pradip Mahanta of Mayurbhanj set a New Meet Record in the Boys Under-20 5000m event with a timing of 14 mins 56.94 secs. 

Nikhil Das of Cuttack set a New Meet Record in the Boys Under-23 High Jump event with a height of 2.01 metres. 

Chiranjib Singh of Cuttack set a New Meet Record in the Boys Under-23 Shot Put event with a throw of 13.91 metres. 

P Arpita Archana Sahoo of KIITS set a New Meet Record in the Girls Under-20 Javelin event with a throw of 42.98 metres. 

Dhanmati Xess of Sundargarh set a New Meet Record in the Girls Under-23 Javelin event with a throw of 41.67 metres.

Jyoti Prakash Nayak of Cuttack set a New Meet record in Hammer boys Under-23 with a throw of 49.11 metres. 

Divya Shandilya of Paradip Port set a New Meet record in Women hammer throw with a throw of 57.67 MTR
