New Delhi, Oct 29: An increase in Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) cases, increased COVID transmission, and an earlier-than-normal flu season are prompting concerns about a potential "tripledemic" of respiratory illness this winter, according to American doctors. Particularly among young infants, RSV infections are reportedly causing several U.S. hospitals to reach capacity. According to paediatrician Dr. Ira Wardono of the Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, California, "We are already seeing people testing positive for more than one virus." {"id":223214,"sizeSlug":"full","linkDestination":"none"} Because they frequently cannot cough up the virus-induced secretions and may require airway suctioning or intravenous fluids, infants are most at risk from RSV. Others might require more oxygen. Most adults and older children often have mild, cold-like symptoms. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, RSV causes an average of 58,000 hospitalizations in children under the age of five and 177,000 hospitalizations in people 65 and older per year. Children in the United States seldom die from RSV, but the virus causes 14,000 deaths in adults each year, with elderly or immunocompromised people being most at risk, according to the CDC.
