CM announces social security scheme for newspaper hawkers

Bhubaneswar, Nov 30: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced a social security scheme for newspaper hawkers in the state. Newspaper hawkers registered with Odisha Unorganised Workers’ Social Security Board (OUWSSB) will be provided with social security. Under the scheme, in the event of death of a newspaper hawker due to accident, an assistance of Rs 2 lakh will be provided to the next of kin of the deceased and in the case of natural death, an assistance of Rs 1 lakh will be provided. Similarly, if one person becomes completely disabled in an accident they will get Rs 1.5 lakh. However, if a person becomes partially disabled in an accident then they will get Rs 80 thousand in case of loss of both the limbs and Rs 40 thousand in case of loss of one limb. Also Rs 3000 will also be given to all the registered newspaper hawkers from Chief Minister’s Relief fund as a monetary support during the challenging times of Covid-19 pandemic. On the other hand, proper work sheds will also be constructed at district level to provide a comfortable workplace for the hawkers. The Chief Minister also directed the Information and Public Relations department to prepare a digital database of all the newspaper hawkers in district and state level and provide them with proper ID cards.
