Bhubaneswar, Aug 19: Special Crime Unit (SCU) of Commissionerate Police has unearthed a brown sugar racket which was running in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar and arrested three persons.
The unit has seized 305 grams of brown sugar worth Rs 35 lakh along with one country-made pistol and three rounds of live ammunition.
A team led by Add DCP SCU, Sanjeev Sathpathy was constantly following the group members since last 15 days. On Saturday, the unit nabbed the accused persons who were selling small quantity of brown sugar in the open market in Pandra area to a drug addict.
Out of three accused persons, one is a B.Tech graduate & another is a Diploma holder. Beside this during house search one country made pistol and three rounds of live ammunitions and one fired cartridge have been seized from the house of one of the accused.
“ The Special Crime Unit is trying to unravel the nature of drug supply chain inside the state and outside and if required the accused would be brought on police remand for further investigation including involvement of other persons and financial transactions related to the drugs and weapon,” said an official.
The Special Crime Unit has been functioning as a police station since May 2023 and this is its first detection of NDPS case. The unit has been established to tackle organised crime, narcotics trade and fraud cases in Commissionerate area.
